I'm a writer and storyteller and for much if my life produced sponsored films and commercials. Subjects were as varied as bananas in Cameroon, oil from the North Sea, fighting organised crime and caring for older people. Their aim was always to make a positive difference, but, worryingly, two commercials I worked on featured in a British Library exhibition, ‘Propaganda’. View all posts by Richard Smith
I made this video to illustrate how the quality of sound reproduction has improved over the years, so that we continually think we have the best, only for it to be improved again and again. My thinking was how much better can it become – especially when the original recordings (like this one) might be over fifty years old. But then along came streaming and mobiles as the most common ways of listening and decades of improvements were lost.
What I completely underestimated was that most people will watch this on their mobiles – so they’ll hear it on a low quality system and through a tiny speaker, meaning, for them, there won’t appear to be any differences between the high quality CD sound and the squawky Alexa! Duh!! I should have thought of that!!
